Citrix was founded in 1989 by ex-IBM developer Ed Iacobucci. Citrix was originally called Citrus but needed to change its name after an existing company claimed trademark rights. Many of the original founding members were from the IBM OS/2 project. Ed's vision was to build OS/2 with multi-user support. IBM was not interested in this idea so Ed decided to leave to form his own company. There were two other founders besides Ed but the other two left before Citrix became successful. The first office was in Richardson, Texas, but moved shortly thereafter to Coral Springs, Florida. The company's first product was Citrix MULTIUSER, which was based on OS/2. Citrix licensed the OS/2 source from Microsoft instead of asking IBM. Citrix hoped to capture part of the UNIX market by making it easy to deploy text-based OS/2 applications. This original thinking did not pan out and it was necessary to re-adjust the plans. Citrix spent much more time listening to what customers wanted and WinView was a result of that change. It was Citrix's first successful product. It came at a dark time in 1993 when it looked like the company would not survive. WinView changed the tide and providing remote access to DOS and Windows 3.1 applications on a multi-user platform proved to address many customer concerns. Microsoft licensed the source code of NT to Citrix, and in 1995 Citrix began to sell WinFrame, a stand-alone system based on Windows NT 3.51 (MultiWin).

The Red Hat Certification Program is Red Hat's professional certification program for Red Hat and general Linux related skills such as system administration on Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

The tests are hands-on and involve troubleshooting, installation, and system administration. There are no multiple-choice questions, and everything is done on a live system. Often there is more than one way to configure a service or troubleshoot a problem, and the exam focuses on the end results, not the process that was taken to achieve that result.

The most common and well-known Red Hat certification is the Red Hat Certified Engineer.

Red Hat Certified Technician (RHCT) and Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) are performance-based tests that measure actual competency on live systems. RHCT is the first step in establishing Linux credentials and is an ideal certification for those transitioning from non-UNIX/Linux environments. RHCE, called the "crown jewel of Linux certifications," proves an individual's ability to configure networking services and security on servers running a Red Hat OS.

RH302 Red Hat Certified Engineer exam

Under Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, the certification exam consists of two parts conducted in a single day. The exam is performance-based, meaning that candidates must perform tasks on a live system, rather than answering questions about how one might perform those tasks.

The two parts of the RHCE Exam consist of:

    * Section I: Troubleshooting and System Maintenance (2.5 hours)
    * Section II: Installation and Configuration (3 hours)

In order to pass the Red Hat Certified Engineer exam under Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, you must meet all of the following requirements:

     * a score of 80 or higher on Section I, consisting of five compulsory and five optionals problems;
     * successful completion of the five Section I compulsory troubleshooting problems within one hour of that section's start time;
     * 70 percent or more on the RHCT-level skills in Section II;
     * 70 percent or more on the RHCE-level skills in Section II.

These last two requirements enable RHCEs to demonstrate that they possess both RHCT-level and RHCE-level skills, as well as enabling a person who only has RHCT level skills to earn RHCT if they pass the required competencies.

SYNOPSIS
(ISC)2®, the International Information System Security Certification Consortium, Inc., was founded in 1989. This not-for-profit organization manages the CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) certification. This advanced-level certification is meant for IT security professionals with the following level of experience: “a minimum of four years of PROFESSIONAL experience in the field of information security. A bachelor's degree can substitute for one of these required years. Additionally, a Master's Degree in Information Security from a National Center of Excellence can substitute for one year towards the four-year requirement." This experience requirement essentially forms the prerequisite for this vendor-neutral certification, although (ISC)2®’s other, lower-level certification, the SSCP (Systems Security Certified Practitioner), is recommended.

In June 2003, (ISC)2® introduced an Associate program that allows candidates to take the exam before they meet the experience requirement. Here’s more on that: “After passing the selected exam and signing (ISC)2®'s Code of Ethics, the Associate must garner the requisite work experience and successfully complete a professional endorsement process before he/she becomes officially certified as CISSP or SSCP.”

In terms of recertification, “The term ‘CPE’ is an acronym for Continued Professional Education credits. After a candidate becomes certified, he/she is required to perform continuing education per 3-year certification period to become recertified. A CISSP must submit 120 CPEs during the 3-year recertification period. Of the 120 CPEs that are required, at least 80 must be ‘A’ credits and as many as 40 can be ‘B’ credits.

The CISSP certification is well suited to IT professionals who aim to be IS (Information Security) professionals, network security professionals, or systems security professionals. The CISSP® designation is achieved by passing one exam.

The CISSP certification was born in 1989 and today it is the gold standard in information security certifications with over 34,000 certified information systems security professional worldwide.

The need for professionalism was a serious topic among computer security practitioners for many years. Professionalism was viewed as the way to upgrade this often ill-defined and poorly understood craft to that of a recognized and disciplined profession. By the mid-1980s, a number of professional societies in North America concluded that a certification process attesting to the qualifications of information security personnel, would enhance the credibility of the computer security profession. Through the societies' cooperative efforts, the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium, or (ISC)2, was established in mid-1989 as an independent, nonprofit corporation whose sole charter is to develop and administer a certification program for information security practitioners. This exam is moderately difficult and costs $499 USD. There are 250 questions and the exam lasts 6 hours.
